Food can tell us where we come from, introduce us to new cultures, and bring people together around the same table. In Minnesota, some of the most compelling stories are being told through the people who grow, cook, create, and share food every day.
That’s the idea behind Relish Presents, a new three-part documentary-style series from the Minnesota PBS producers of the Daytime Emmy®-nominated and James Beard Media Award-winning Relish. Premiering Saturday, August 22, at 10:30 am, Relish Presents takes viewers beyond the plate to meet six Minnesota culinary storytellers and discover the experiences, traditions, and communities that shape their work.
Six voices shaping Minnesota’s food story
Each film offers an intimate look at a Minnesota chef, food maker, or community leader whose work reflects a different part of our state’s culinary landscape.
Meet the featured storytellers:
- Alex Roberts — chef and restaurateur behind Alma and Brasa
- Karyn Tomlinson — chef and owner of Myriel
- Lachelle Cunningham — founder of Healthy Roots Institute
- Mecca Bos — founder of BIPOC Foodways Alliance
- Amalia Moreno-Damgaard — chef and founder of Culture Through Cuisine
- Mateo and Erin Mackbee — chefs and owners of Krewe
More than what’s on the plate
At the heart of Relish Presents is a simple idea: food is about more than food. It’s about heritage and identity. It’s about creativity and entrepreneurship. It’s about sharing knowledge across generations and creating spaces where people can connect.
“Food has a remarkable way of bringing people together and opening the door to meaningful conversations,” said co-producers Amy Melin and Brittany Shrimpton. “Relish Presents celebrates the individuals whose stories remind us that food is about much more than what’s on the plate — it’s about community, heritage, creativity and connection.”
That spirit is what connects the six stories. While each featured chef and maker has a unique perspective, together they offer a broader look at the people and communities making Minnesota’s food scene so distinctive.
